Through the book design process I've come to appreciate the detailed and even therapeutic rhythm of coding. With print projects, XML-tagging a manuscript is a designer's magical shortcut to a fully designed piece. From there, I got my hands on ebook design, and am interested in sticking to the code and developing these skills further.
I collaborated with the PDXOpen project through the Portland State University Library's PDXScholar initiative to share open-access textbooks and academic resources. I assisted with converting PDFs to epub ebooks using HTML & CSS. These texts required a refresh from a design standpoint, and proved challenging with added elements such as tables and foreign language sections. An advocate of endless learning, I enjoyed rising to the challenge and contributing to this initiative.
memories flow in our veins: forty years of women's writing from calyx
This was the first ebook I helped to create, and as a project team member for Memories Flow in Our Veins, an anthology of women writers, I was especially interested in taking on this project. Balancing a variety of prose and poetry kept things interesting, and unpacking the details of coding best practices established my interest in e-production in addition to print.
