the ocean in my ears

This collaborative cover for The Ocean in my Ears began with a nod to the early 90's through a cotton candy color scheme and a design that would fit a young adult market, especially on the older side when relationships and a more mature coming of age narrative is of interest. The watercolor mountains echo the story's Alaskan setting, while the VW bug hints at both the decade and the protagonist's desire to leave her small town. Arranging these layers together—plus another watercolor splash for good measure—creates a sense of subtle sophistication to balance the youthful style of bold and bright.
